Where do we fit in the postvention process?
Initial outreach to identified family/next of kin begins 5 months after a youth (24 and under) death. This provides an important touch point for families and close contacts at a point in which initial crisis or grief response and supports may have ended, or were not initially utilized. Interviews and other available data are coded and put into a report that can be used at fatality review meetings and shared with other prevention partners to inform broader prevention efforts.
What can I expect as a postvention lead in my county?
Our team will reach out to the county postvention response lead and/or tribal postvention contacts once a family member consents to the interview. We want to 1) gather any cultural or contextual factors to be aware of and 2) ensure we have information to connect participants to resources available through local county, tribal, or other community organizations. Please see the image on the left for a step-by-step breakdown of the process.
